About the Artist

My name is Sylvia Humphrey and this is my new website. I’ve been designing and making collectible teddy bears for about four years. My adventure into the teddy bear world began when my future daughter-in-law gave me a Boyd’s Bear for my birthday. I soon had quite a few of these cute bears sitting on shelves all over the house. I went on to collect artist bears in mohair which I thought were wonderful. Next, I tried my hand at making a bear of my own. That first bear turned out pretty good so I made another, then another. After that I just couldn’t stop making them – I was having such fun!!

My bears are all designed by me and are mostly traditional in style, ranging from 12” to 22” tall. They come in all colors and textures being made with German or English mohair. I use only quality wool felt or ultra suede for the paw and foot pads in shades to compliment the mohair. They have German glass eyes, and their noses are hand-embroidered and waxed. The bears are firmly filled with excelsior, polyfill, plastic pellets and sometimes steel shot to give them a nice weighty feel. I love making them and I love them all. They each seem to have their own personality – it’s really amazing!

I was raised in England not far from London and although I don’t remember having a teddy bear as a small child my Mom always said I did have one and that I always seemed to leave him out in the rain – how guilty I feel now! I live in Southern California with my husband John and four cats, Cleo, Misty, Amber and Jazzy. We have three grown up sons, one of whom designed this website for me. Of course, it doesn’t rain much here on the West Coast and my teddy bears are looked after very well, if fact, they are more than a little spoilt which is because they are so good!!
